Summer holidays are one of the best times of the year for families, but many parents struggle when it comes to ensuring that their toddlers continue to get good quality sleep.
It's said that your body clock uses light and darkness as signals for day and night. This means that during the longer summer evenings our body clock will tell us it’s still daytime and we need to stay awake.
In most cases your child should fall asleep within 30 minutes of going to bed and a good daytime and bedtime routine can help with this. We've provided a few tips below to help this perfect scenario happen.

Toddler Sleep Tips:
1. Keep blinds closed during the day
This helps to keep bedrooms cool but remember to open blinds and windows an hour before bedtime to allow fresh air to circulate.
2. Night-time snacks
Young toddlers need to eat every 2.5-3 hours, so they will often need a snack at bedtime. Avoid high sugar/caffeine treats and opt for something nutritious like milk and crackers.
3. Bedtime routine
Warm milk or a story are perfect additions to a bedtime routine as they help your toddler to wind down and relax. Avoid letting your toddler use electronics or watch tv an hour before bed as this will stimulate their brain.
4. Create a relaxing bedroom
Ensure bedrooms are sufficiently dark by installing good quality blinds such as the BlocOut, which comes in a range of colours and patterns. Nightlights are a perfect addition for any toddlers that are scared of the dark.
The bedroom should also be comfortably warm [between 18-20 degrees celsius] and located in a quiet part of the house, so that your toddler can enjoy a full nights' sleep.

Sleep aids
1. Dummy/pacifier
In the early months, most toddlers can soothe themselves back to sleep with a dummy. Whilst not for everyone, this can be a great short term solution.
2. Music
Lullabies, nursery rhymes and even white noise can be played via CD or an app to help your child to drift off into dreamland.
3. Comforter
Most (but not all) children will find a favourite blanket or soft cuddly toy before they're a year old, which can be of great comfort at night-time.
4. Lavender
Well-known for it's soothing properties, a lavender spray or plant in the nursery can help your child to relax when it's time to sleep.
